Tour of my office server rack!
Here is a quick rundown of my server rack! I think in the future I might do a deeper dive into the specifics of each of the machines.
The primary use case for this rack is two fold:
1 - Web hosting and virtualization
2 - Video post production and 3D animations
Overall I am really happy with the current setup, I think there are ways I could improve it but for now it is working smoothly. But the life of a sysadmin demands I continue to grow so I'm sure a year from now it will be a 42U monster.
Thanks for watching!!

    I love the neat cabling at the back, but as it is done, you're unable to slide out any of the servers without having to disconnect everything... in mine you can slide out all of them, but in contrast it looks like a pile of spaghetti :) Some DIY hacky cable management arm for the servers would be nice...

    • @pealock
      @pealock День назад

      Agreed, yes my setup is definitely limited. When I do have to service the machine, I usually just pop the top off and get to it from above. Open frame rack perks I suppose! In the future I would love doing the cable arm approach, as others have suggested!

    How is the PowerEdge so quiet? Did you replace fans? My R610 used to sound like a jet taking off

    • @pealock
      @pealock День назад

      Two explanations! 1. I am using a voice isolator on my voice that helps reduce background noise. 2. 13th gen Dell servers are actually not so bad. Theres a few ways to tame them down, using ipmi-tool and setting manual fan curves is definitely an option. But out of the box they are definitely a bit above comfortable if you’re in the same room for more than a few minutes.

    Nice setup! But, I can't help but notice you have sliding rails and yet you've velcro'd that cables coming out of the back. If you ever want to slide anything out, you'll want to remember to unvelcro those. If you're not a fan of hanging slack, you can get some cable management arms that hold the cable slack and scissor open when you slide anything forwards. They're not too expensive so they're well worth the price, but if you don't need or foresee yourself sliding anything out, how you've done things is probably fine so long as you're mindful.

    • @pealock
      @pealock Месяц назад

      Absolutely thanks for the suggestion! Thankfully I can service both of them without fully sliding them out but yes if I have to remove them fully I will unvelcro/ revelcro.

      @pealock Месяц назад

      Thank you!! The case is a Rosewill L4500U. Its fairly large, tons of room for components. I use an EKWB 360mm AIO liquid cooler for the CPU. Temps are pretty good for a rack system which typically run a little bit warmer. For what its worth, if I were looking to build/buy something new I would get a Sliger rack case. They have some really awesome cases and more flexible and modern layouts. But the Rosewill is a beast don’t get me wrong! You just have to have a really deep rack cabinet to accommodate it.

    Nice video, love seeing others setups. One thing I would recommend, even though it may be a one off is setting up a standard for yourself so all jobs are alike. I.e. The wan in/out for the dish, I am assuming it was just a random port picked? Like in this instance, I would have used the last port for the uplink/downlink (23/24).

    • @pealock
      @pealock 3 месяца назад

      Yeah! That's a great point. The line for the dish was bundled into a group of four lines labeled Office 1, 2, 3, and 4. I just sequenced those into the patch panel but you are correct it isn't standardized at all. I will consider that for future jobs, thank you for that suggestion. Standards are key for replication and scaling.

    One resone to use the POE adapter for the PtP link is lightning. It will just increase the likelihood that it will destroy the 24 Port. Idealy you would have a grounded lightning arester, POE adapter then the UDR. I have seen to manny dishes hit in my time and the first thing plugged in always blows up. Looks like a Fantastic and well planed install!

      Hey thanks for the kind words! One suggestion I would definitely make is to set your subnet to something random and rarely used. One issue I ran into early on was having my devices on a similar subnet as the venues connection, and my devices defaulted to DHCP from their router and bypassed mine. Not sure if it is just a quirk of Ubiquitis ecosystem but as a fix I have my devices on 10.1.10.x-100. Haven't had any problems since doing that! What all are you looking at getting for your setup??

    • @martinchambers6930

As well as a chinese versions of a Webcaster and a BM H.264/recorder which I hope to add into the system. Still waiting on parts to arive, but my goal is to get it all working without the need for a second monitor (can do all the switching on the dual display) - just carry the one 6U case around with me and I am set to go.
